Cricket at the Alnwick Gardens - A Reflection
Cricketqube recently delivered an eight-week Senior Backyard Cricket session for Elderberries, the older people charity at Alnwick Garden. The sessions were delivered at the picturesque Garden itself or when the rain came in to visit us, at the wedding hall at the venue.
We engaged 15 unique individuals over the course of the sessions and had players of a diverse range of abilities, conditions and ages across the sessions. Some of the stories include,
Sheila, 82, who last played cricket at school and was the caption of the cricket team picking up the bat after 66 years. Sheila said, “Enjoyable. The camaraderie was great. Great opportunity to socialise with people.”
Tony retired from cricket 25 years ago after serving as wicket-keeper and relished the return to the game and said, “Alosh was very friendly and enthusiastic! The range of equipment was good! It was so good to be outside on such a lovely day playing cricket!”.
The participants included people on a walker, living with dementia and other diseases. Cricket brought them together, and brought them joy!
