If activities and their maximum engagement threshold continues regularly, week-on-week all year-round, engaging the defined participant demographics at the defined intensity and duration of sport and physical activity, can help create the following estimated social value for their local communities:

Use Real DataHealth Impact
Physical health-related impacts through sports and physical activities have been found in primary and secondary prevention of many chronic diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancer and osteoporosis by various studies, and there is a growing body of evidence that highlights the positive impacts of organised sport, and its associated social interactions, on the mental health of participants by reducing stress and increasing positive affect and general wellness[1].
People engaged by gender and participation rate.
People impacted by areas of health deprivation.
We used the Social Value of Sport and Physical Activity in England framework developed and published by Sport England to assess the value of health outcomes by calculating how many potential cases could be prevented through sports and physical activity, multiplied by the average yearly cost for each person diagnosed with the condition.
For self-reported good health, which was determined based on reduced use of healthcare services like doctor visits and psychotherapy, the calculation involved multiplying the number of people engaged in sports and physical activity in by the estimated cost savings per person resulting from fewer doctor visits and less psychotherapy.
Increased injuries resulting from participation in sport were calculated by the estimated increase of risk of sports injuries (dependant on the intensity of the activity) multiplied by the average cost of an injury.

Educational Impact
A majority of the educational impacts generated through participation in sport are derived from the mental health and psychological benefits that individuals gain from participating in sport, such as positive affect, optimism, self-esteem and self-efficacy.
These impacts tend to have a more pronounced effect on children and young people, however, these impacts gained at a young age are an important factor for effective human development, and have implications for adult life[2].
People engaged by education and employment deprivation decile.
Enhancing academic achievement is quantified by assessing the quantity of extra engaged individuals between the ages of 16 and 18 who are likely to possess formal qualifications like GCSEs and A-levels, as well as the associated economic value in terms of their average annual lifetime productivity returns.
Improved human potential by enhancing employability is assessed by calculating the quantity of young adults likely to graduate from higher education institutions who engage in sports and physical activities, multiplied by the average extra income earned by graduates who actively participate.

Societal Impact
In terms of development of social capital, studies have found a correlation between participation in sport and development of social relationships, collective community action and reduction in social tensions, however, the correlation is dependent on how the sport programmes are structured and the wider social issues that exist [3].
Social capital impacts generated by sport can be majorly classified into three groups: bonding capital (networking and social connectedness), bridging capital (collective identities, social integration, understanding of others and attitudes towards others) and linking capital (Institutional networks, social support structures and heterogenous social links) [4].
Anti-social behaviour incidents in areas of participation.
For crime reduction, research has found participation in sports promotes pro-social behavior, reduces the risk of delinquency and criminal conduct, and lowers the likelihood of repeat offenses.
In the context of volunteering in sports, there are two significant aspects of social capital: the connections you make with others (social networks) and the sense of belonging and identity (collective identities). Volunteering in sports is a form of social capital in itself, as it involves actively participating in the community and building social relationships through your volunteer efforts[5].
Estimated likelihood of participants engaging in volunteering and disengaging from anti-social behaviour.
The monetary value of social capital outcomes is assessed by determining the hypothetical income required to compensate for the absence of benefits derived from enhanced social capital (including subjective well-being) through engagement in sports and physical activities.
Potential cost savings on crime reduction is estimated by the number of young adults that are likely to be prevented from engaging in anti-social behaviour or re-offending multiplied by the average cost per incident to the public.

Define where you will deliver sport activities, and what type of sport facility it is.
Step 3: Define your activities
Define what type of sport activities you will deliver and how often you will deliver sport activities every week.
Step 3: Define your participants
Define how many participants you deliver activities for and their demographic splits (or proceed with the splits from census 2021 data).

SportFin's social value estimations are based on the Social Value of Sport and Physical Activity in England forecast model developed and published by Sport England in 2023. You can read the full report through this link (go to the Valuing Outcomes section for specific information on calculations). This estimation is a 'maximum value' estimation, which assumes that the participation threshold achieved by participants analysed continues year-round week-on-week as regular participation.
