Cricketqube Impact Stories
One Year of Cricket at Gateshead OPA
When we started delivering cricket at the Gateshead Older People Assembly at the start of summer 2022, it was just a six-week pilot. People loved it so much that it was extended to the whole summer, and then for one whole year!We have already delivered sixteen sessions at Gateshead and have engaged with more than thirty unique individuals! It wasn't just cricket at Gateshead though, we had the opportunity to take them all the South Shields beach to play some beach cricket - the first time in most of our clients' lives! Sun, beach, cricket, what else do you want?!The stories from GOPA are incredible, from the 85-year-old John to Margarette who steals a bat back every week to practice at home, cricket has made their lives happy! What about Polly and Iris - best friends - who became unlikely cricketers after hating the game all their lives?! Not content with just playing the game, they have also taken up coaching sessions at the start of the event! Team England, they are coming!
Cricket at the Alnwick Gardens - A Reflection
Cricketqube recently delivered an eight-week Senior Backyard Cricket session for Elderberries, the older people charity at Alnwick Garden. The sessions were delivered at the picturesque Garden itself or when the rain came in to visit us, at the wedding hall at the venue. We engaged 15 unique individuals over the course of the sessions and had players of a diverse range of abilities, conditions and ages across the sessions. Some of the stories include,Sheila, 82, who last played cricket at school and was the caption of the cricket team picking up the bat after 66 years. Sheila said, “Enjoyable. The camaraderie was great. Great opportunity to socialise with people.”Tony retired from cricket 25 years ago after serving as wicket-keeper and relished the return to the game and said, “Alosh was very friendly and enthusiastic! The range of equipment was good! It was so good to be outside on such a lovely day playing cricket!”. The participants included people on a walker, living with dementia and other diseases. Cricket brought them together, and brought them joy!
